Growing up on the west coast of Canada we have a deep appreciation for the bounty that mother nature provides. Established in 1986, in the Student Union Building at UBC, au Natural Surf Company was formed to gain access to the many surf breaks off the west shores of Vancouver Island. Initially a surf tour company, we have been travelling to Tofino to enjoy the world class surf for over 30 years.

Today, we are committed to building and riding quality wooden surfboards from sustainable wood products while reducing our foot print on our planet. We use local wood products and recycled timbers to reduce waste as much as possible.

DCIM100GOPROAu natural surfboards are hollow-core with a super strong internal structure. A computer generated design and CNC produces ensures the internal support structure will withstand the pressure from the most challenging breaks! Our wooded boards are similar in weight to your typical foam boards, but they are way more pleasing to surf.  We design our wooden surfboard to last a life time, and because the natural wood is so beautiful, they can also be used as a featured piece of art hanging on your wall. Our boards are inspired by our ever changing environment and magical setting in the North Shore of Vancouver, BC. We are constantly experimenting with different shapes and sizes, wood types and fin setup to meet your requirements when on the water.

We offer you the ability to buy or build your own piece of natural art that is a beast in the surf. Check out the rest of the site for more details…we love hear from you, so drop us a line leave us a comment on our contact page. Check out the au natural website for Long Beach trial days where you can test drive one of our boards and see for yourself!

Surfboard kits

Make your own wooden surfboard using au natural DIY surfboard kits. Our kits are shaped in a computer and cut using by North Shore CNC from marine grade plywood to create the perfect frame. You provide the cedar strips, glue, clamps and sweat and soon you will have a sweet cedar ride for your next trip to Chestermans Beach.

The Fish:

The au natural fish surfboard differs from your typical shortboard in that it has a wider, rounder nose, a wider mid-section width and a ‘swallow tail’. We like ours to be between 5’2″ and 6’4″ long and between 18″ and 22″ wide, but custom is what we do so we are not confined to the norm. These boards have been designed to improve wave catching capability while maintaining speed and maneuverability performance, ideal for Vancouver Island’s small to medium sized waves.

The Gun:

The au natural gun is long, narrow and pointy at both the nose and tail for maximum rail contact. Ours range from 6′ to 8′ plus. These wooden surfboards are ideal for the illusive big wave, or for powerful, steep waves of Vancouver Island. They are ideal for this type of surf because they are easier to paddle out further to the big surf and easier to control on the steeper waves. The name derives from the term ‘elephant gun’, and means the board is the surfers’ gun for hunting down big game/giant surf.

The Longboard:

The au natural longboard are usually over 9′ long, with a rounded nose. Au natural longboards are much more stable in the water, they are easier to paddle and great for catching waves, making them ideal for men of girth and learning on. However due to their size, it can be tougher to get through the white water and oncoming sets. There is a great deal of style attached to riding a longboard – and that’s why we ride them. Au natural longboards are known for their hang fives and  tens, drop-knee turns, cross-stepping along the deck of the board… and even tandem surfing! Go Bart Go!

What’s SUP:

Kids playing with dogs on a paddleboardAu natural surf offers a multipurpose touring paddle boards which offers are typically much wider, longer, have a greater volume, than your regular surfboard. Their size and volume make them more much more stable than wave boards. These boards are perfect if you are spending your time flat-water paddling on lakes or cruising outside of the surf zone on a beautiful day. Touring boards are great for beginners, so if this is your first time looking into sup and you will mostly be on flat water, then I recommend you go with one of these.

Au Natural Surfboards

There are many different types and shapes of surfboards, and your own standard/ability and style of surfing will determine what board you should ride. Here we offer a brief description of board dimensions, the types and shapes, the rocker, fins and tails, and what’s best for DIY looking to build their own au natural wooden surfboard.

Dimensions of a surfboard…

The length, width and depth of your board greatly affects its or the surfers performance in the water. Au natural surfboards are made of cedar strips on a hollow frame which are then coated in fibreglass, making them light and strong.

Length. The length of the surfboard is very important. The longer the board the easier it is to paddle and to stand up on as it will feel more stable under the surfer’s feet. Insert “men of girth” comment here.

Width. The width of the surfboard affects how stable the board is and its ease of control. As with the length, the wider the board, the more stability the board will have.

Depth. The depth or thickness of the board determines how well it floats. The greater the floatation is, the smoother the ride on the wave when stood up and the easier it is to paddle. And so simple physics will tell you the heavier the surfer, the thicker the board should ideally be.

So here is what we have in stock…
